Cloud Technology What Are The Benefits And Security Threats?

I think it’s fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we’ve ever created. They’re tools of communication, they’re tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user. Bill Gates

When cloud technology was first introduced to the market, many people were skeptical. Developers and Software providers did their best to convince people to move to cloud technology, but everyone was hesitant. Why should they use cloud if they have the budget to spend on buying the most advanced infrastructure? The biggest worry of business owners is confidentiality and privacy of their data. Can the provider guarantee cloud security to ensure the privacy of data information?

What is cloud technology

Before we discuss more on cloud technology and security, let us begin first by defining what is meant by cloud technology? Everyone knows what clouds are. These are the cotton-like formations you can see up in the sky. In a sense, that is what cloud technology means. An offsite server process, manage, and store data and then send it virtually using electronic data transfer over the internet. The best example of cloud technology is the email services provided by browsers like Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

How to use cloud technology

There are two options you can choose from: cloud computing and cloud storage. Cloud storage is offsite storing of files and data and maintaining back up data for a company or a business entity. Cloud computing includes not just storage, but the entire system process of a company over a virtual desktop using either secure internet or leased line. These processes include Order to Cash, Purchase to Pay, Inventory Management, and other Financial related processes. Cloud storage is not mandatory with cloud computing services but it is ideal and practical to combine both in one server.

What are the benefits and security threats?

No need to maintain expensive hardware on-premise

Loss of access during internet downtime

Easy access to your data anywhere

Prone to hacking

Auto update of software and patches

      Unreliable service provider

Allows you to work anywhere and on any device

Service fee increases every year

Reduce IT maintenance cost

      Hampers productivity during downtime

Improves a company’s productivity

No total control over the server and your data

Secure data back up

No clear laws on cloud security and data privacy

Information technology and business are becoming inextricably interwoven. I don’t think anybody can talk meaningfully about one without the talking about the other. Bill Gates

Minimizing the risk

You would probably ask, just how safe is your data in cloud technology? There is no clear answer to that question. What you can do is take the necessary steps to minimize the threats if not altogether eliminate it.

ü Get a reliable provider. Make sure that your provider has the knowledge and experience to provide the services you need. Do not rely on advertisements alone. Check by talking to some of their clients.

ü Make sure you understand the End User License Agreement (EULA). A lot of companies think that the EULA is the same across all contracts. Some providers have certain specifications included in their EULA that are not part of the standard agreement. It is best that you read and understand the EULA before you sign anything.

ü You need to make sure that the service agreement covers every aspect of the service you require. The last thing you want is finding parts of your data floating around the internet. Ask for transparency from your provider.

ü Make sure your service provider has a high bit data encryption.

ü Do not send your most sensitive data on cloud storage. You can have this stored on-premise even with minimal IT maintenance.

ü Arm your employees with knowledge. Teach your employees about cloud technology, its benefits and the risk that comes with its use. Teach them how to safeguard your system like using strong passwords.

In Conclusion

Cloud security threat is global. Technology advancement moves faster before any legislators around the world can regulate data privacy. However, you cannot allow these threats to define how your business should run. If the cost benefits outweigh the risk to use cloud technology, then, by all means, go ahead with it.
